Uncle Tony
My Life as a Projectionist
The Italian American Cacchio family in the Hudson Valley town of Rosendale, New York, built stone floors by day and – starting in 1949 – ran a local movie theater by night. In an old brick building that had once been a dance hall and vaudeville theater, they greeted customers the door as they came to see popular films of the 1950s.
After fifty years only Tony Cacchio and his nephew Michael were left to run the show. Real estate developers wanted to demolish the old place, but residents from all over the Hudson valley formed a cooperative to keep the theater alive. Shown in four Italian film festivals and winner of the audience choice award at Asti, Uncle Tony is a movie about cinema and its enduring appeal as an art form and communal experience.
With English and Italian subtitles.
